My first sewing projects will be simple tops, and I would like their colors to fit into a small wardrobe. I have a limited fabric budget, which makes it worth thinking through the colors before I start buying yardage. I usually wear dark grey trousers and jeans, so I have a fairly neutral starting point for the new tops. I am gathering swatches in dusty green, burgundy, and cream to see which combinations feel easiest to wear. While looking for a way to organize those observations, I came across personal color analysis but my immediate goal is choosing usable fabric rather than settling every question about seasonal categories. Is a low-cost trial garment a better next step than spending longer with the loose swatches? I would welcome advice from anyone who has balanced a personal palette with the realities of learning to sew.
