Making hair shade references easier to compare

A costume project needs a removable fringe that blends with my hair, but the shade names are confusing. The product pictures use bright studio lighting, while my reference photographs were taken beside a window. Two samples can both be called brown while appearing quite different in warmth and depth. I found hair color analysis and wondered whether a more precise description would help me ask sellers the right questions. Should I prioritize a similar depth first, then compare warmth using photographs taken in comparable light? Because the piece touches my own hair, even a modest difference could stand out at the join. The costume will be worn indoors, so I would also compare the sample in that room. A sample swatch is an option if another round of photographs does not settle the choice. Has anyone matched a removable hairpiece this way, and which details were most useful in the comparison?
