Using outline categories as a starting point
I am organizing a small family photo archive and adding short descriptions for relatives. The same relative appears at different ages, sometimes facing forward and sometimes turning slightly. I can describe the jaw or forehead separately, yet I hesitate to assign one face shape label. I saved a face shape test to help me think about the terminology. I would use that only as a vocabulary prompt, since an old photograph can hide important details. In some pictures the forehead is hidden by hair, and in others the jaw disappears into shadow. The notes would list the date and pose first, followed by whatever outline details remain clearly visible. If two photographs suggest different categories, I would rather preserve that uncertainty than silently choose one. How do others write useful descriptive notes when old portraits offer incomplete or conflicting visual information?
